Gunnerkrigg is a webcomic about a teenage girl who goes to a strange school in an old industrial city called "Gunnerkrigg Court", where the "court" has eshewed nature and myth for cold hard facts and science, despite relying on the mystical unknown.
Annie (Antimony) herself is very intune with the ether, the unknown mystical side of things, easily making friends with ghosts and other creatures, where as her best friend Kat is scarily adept at all things technology, making incredible machines at a young age.
The webcomic follows a long intricate series of events that happens due to Annies actions in the very first chapter, which started in 2005. The comic is still being updated multiple times a week, now over 100 chapters, and still picking up threads that were dropped in very early chapters. The author's dedication and story weaving is astounding.
Not only is the plot intricate and well planned, but each character has their own set of convictions and mistakes.
Do you like robots who have catholic guilt? Immortal women who wear pencil skirts? Girls who get haircuts? You might like Gunnerkrigg Court!
Okay now on to more "spoilery" things!
⚠ WIP ⚠
The rest of this page is a big work in progress!!! I've been going through the entire comic to collect my examples, and with 3000+ pages its gonna take awhile (I'm about halfway there). Beware of typos and half formed ideas. Many images are lacking alt text as well.
At first Gunnerkrigg seems like it will be more episodic in nature, with Annie and Kat making friends with new monsters every week. But it turns out to be a series dependant on a long chain of events started on the first page.
On the very first page after the title page, we see Annie meeting Shadow. pg 2
Shadow wants to go back to the forest across from the school and the otherside of the bridge, but cannot cross himself. This is on page 6 in the first chapter, hinting at what is in the ravine, a very key element to the story. pg 6
On the same page Annie plans to send Shadow across the bridge, which students are forbidden from crossing. This kickstarts everything. pg 6
On page 9, Robot is introduced, another signifigant character, especially for Kats arc.
Later on in chapter 7 Robot comes back and Annie runs out to meet him, but he is posessed by a malovent creature, causing him to push Annie off the bridge. pg 118
Annie meets the ghost trapped in the ravine, which again, is very significant. pg 141
Chapter 16 (2008), Kat suggests that the ghost Annie met is trapped and needs help. pg 357
Annie and Kat have learned who the ghost is along the way (pg 429), what is keeping her down there (pg 653), and now the gang starts a plan to help Jeanne (Chapter 30 pg 784, 2010)
(Theres gonna be more examples leading up to current events here)
Aside from the main chain of events, there are other long running threads that are hinted at early on, only to be picked up much later.
As Robot crosses the bridge, we see for the first time the "tic toc" birds on page 13. pg 13
In chapter 8 ( pg 124, published 2006) these birds save Annie from dying when she's flung off the bridge, a very signifigant event.
Annie discovers that these birds are mechanical while she's in the ravine in the same chapter. Afterwards these birds only show up intermittently, always shrowded in mystery. pg 127
Kat thinks about how the birds are designed after Annie describes them. pg 157
In Chapter 11 pg 194, Zimmy throws a stick at the bird.
Chapter 14 pg 276 Anja recognizes the mechanical bird Ysengrin brings back.
In Chapter 25 pg 646 (2009) the robots refer to the birds as being made by a mythical being, while they have also been calling Kat an angel.
Its not until Chapter 76 pg 2310 (published 2020) where Kat has recently made the bird.
In chapter 8 while Annies still down in the ravine, she is visited by Muut, someone who she is familiar with and not particularly pleased to see. She also referes to "others". pg 133
Chapter 16, Kat points out Annie wanted Ketrak to leave quickly and doesn't talk about the guides often pg 335
Two guides recruit the help of a very young Annie, after trying to get Surma to help them but she is too weak (pg 338). A dead boy does not realise he has died (neither has Annie yet) and is afraid of the two guides. Annie is able to help the boy realise what happened so he can chose one of the guides to go with. It seems at even at a very young age she is able to assit the guides in very valuable ways.
In Chapter 21 (2009) Muut reveals he told Mort to give Annie the blinker stone so she could help free the ghost in the ravine, just as she did for the the boy in Chapter 16 (pg 338). Annie heavily implies he should not have done this, that guides are not to interfere with the lives of the living. pg 528
Again Annie is able to help in ways the guides cannot. pg 526
We also learn the reason Annie dislikes the guides is that none of them helped escort her mother into the afterlife/ether, leaving it to her as a child (pg 530). I've got some more to say about that in Surma's section...
Annie is about to take Mort into the after life, and one of the guides takes this as her deciding to become one (pg 1334).
Ankou is refering to Jeanne here, who Annie wants to free (pg 1336 chapter 47).
The underlying feeling throughout the comic is that the court used to be much bigger than it seems to be now. Its history is shrowded, unsavory parts deliberately erased, and how it was even formed still remains unknown. If the comic didn't have a history of resolving loose threads decades after they were introduced, dozens of chapters after they were last mentioned, one would assume that Tom (comic author and illustrator) had lost interest in adressing it, but I have hope that they will at least be touched upon before the comic ends. It probably won't be resolved fully, as Tom does like to leave things up to the readers interpretation rather than spelling everything out, but I hope to see a little more of it.
This is more about the history of the court and not its more current plans.
Coyote hints that the Court did something to the river that prevented anyone from crossing. pg 491
Jones, an observational and impartial figure, says she thinks the Court has deliberately hidden some of its past. (pg 588).
In Chapter 25 we learn that it was Diego, creator of the Court robots and a founder of the court, who developed the method of sacrificing Jeanne, all because she rejected him. Most other Court leaders go along with this plan in hopes of protecting the Court from the forest creatures. They then agree to hide what they have done. (pg 654)
I belive this is the first mention of "the seed bismuth", which is not actually shown here. (pg 581). Its worth noting that the Court is represented by the alchemy symbol for bismuth all throughout the comic.
Forest people say the Court grew from the seed bismuth (pg 877).
This robot created by Diego (one of the Court founders) also says it grew from the seed bismuth (pg 897).
Annie encounters a wisp in the forest who claims to be the seed bismuth. Of course it is lying, but as Coyote said, they mix truth with lies (pg 1248 Chapter 44, 2013).
Another long hinted at mystery in the comic, which wasn't revealed until recent years.
Jones vaugely says the court has a way of making decisions, Chapter 17 (2008). We of course don't have any inkling of what this refers to yet or if it is any more interesting than a staff meeting.
pg 372Its pretty clear the court has ulterior motives throughout the comic, but Coyotes plan came at a surprise to me, his chaotic nature makes him hard to predict, and he seemed content to lounge around and play tricks. Not that his plan is out of character. No, it makes sense, and sheds light on the purpose of things hes done and said in the past.
Literally.
Robot comes back with a tree arm in Chapter 7.
pg 114
End of Chapter 9: Robot's tree arm is planted in a decontamination unit like the one Annie and Kat found.
pg 163
In Chapter 12 after Robot is revived, he explains how he got his tree arm, from a seed planted by Ysengrin, who we don't know yet.
pg 223
Ysengrin leaves behind three seeds in Chapter 14, which appears to be the real reason why they visited (the bird being planted by him as revealed by Red in Chapter 15).
pg 286 pg 320
The hand tree was transfered to a park in the court, Chapter 24 (2009) pg 607
Chapter 14 (2007) is the first time we actually see Ysengrin, before he's introduced yet, and his tree parts are already shown trembling. The school headmaster also asks him what he's done to himself, implying he looked different last time he saw him. pg 270
Its shortly revealed that Coyote gifted him with the tree body (still trembling) pg 280
Coyotee hints at Ysengrins deteriorating mental state, as does Jones after they leave. pg 284 pg 286
During Annie's first visit to the forest Coyote mentions trying to give Renard his powers, as hes now doing with Ysengrin, Chapter 20 (2008) pg 493
Coyote knows Ysengrin would attack humanity if given the oppourtunity (pg 494)
We see Renard accepts a power, but we don't learn until later that Coyote wasn't entirely truthful...pg 495
And here we go, in chapter 43 we see that Coyote pressured Renard into stealing a human's body (pg 1214), which would end up killing him.
After pointing out how Renards body snatching powers are flawed, Coyote points out how Ysengrin trembles with Coyotes power over the trees. He is very aware of how other creatures struggle with his abilities.pg 496
Coyote mentions his Great Secret, which sets Ysengrin on edge, Chapter 20 (2008) pg 498
Anja reveals that Surma lead Renard on to get him caputure by the court, being deemed a threat because Coyote was offering him powers. Annie brings up Ysengrin because Coyote has given him a power yet the court is not trying to capture him, but Anja dismisses this... pg 793
Coyote promises to tell Annie about his Great Secret if she tells him a story about himself. Again this sets Ysengrin on edge. (Chapter 39 pg 1066, 2012)
He tells a story about how he only exists due to the imagination of humans, particularly those who are dying in the desert and being hunted by coyotes. Many of the etheric beings are manifestations of human myths, though he explains that it doesn't have to be a wider cultural belief, the superstition of a solitary individual can contribute to an etheric beings existance.
Coyote knows how Ysengrin will react (poorly), (pg 1075)
Annie accidentally says something that makes Ysengrin think that she thinks humans are superior, and he snaps, going after her. Eglamore saves her and brings up Ysengrin's deteriorated mental state (pg 1087).
Annie asks Ysengrin about what happened and he can't remember, but he knows he has forgotten important memories before (pg 1239).
Coyote gives Annie his tooth sword in Chapter 26 (2010)
pg 686This sword is notably not used during the gangs confrontation with Jeanne, a skilled sword fighter, even though it seemed like it was built up to be used then.
Kat is generally shown to be earnest and open with her emotions, overall kind yet not afraid to stick up for herself or Annie. She clearly has a good heart. Yet lying under this sweet hearted girl is the potential for her to give up her humanity and become something terrifying. She is Deified by the robots and manipulated into progressing them faster, and to advance her work, she advances herself with technology. And throughout it she remains the same lovable Kat, even if troubled. This is an arc that is still developing, but began early.
In Chapter 5, at probably around 12 years old Kat makes a gravity feild generator, an early indication of her incredible technological capabilities
pg 70
Zimmy has already been shown to be hostile towards Kat, though not afraid yet, and considering she's not exactly friendly to most people that hasn't been out of the ordinary, but here we see she hates Kat's bird (though we don't yet know she made it)
pg 194
The first time we see Kat called an angel by the robots, Robot himself in this case, is in Chapter 12 (published in 2007). At first this appears to be a lighthearted moment in the comic, but it grows into something deeper.
pg 221
Chapter 17 Kat gets a workshop so she can build a human looking android, after Annie suggests that Jones is a robot (not a robot).
pg 397 pg 402
Chapter 19 where we first see Zimmys inner hellworld, she mentions dying here one day, and in the caption Tom says he wouldn't bet against her. At first this appears to have nothing to do with Kat, but it becomes relevant when Zimmy makes another prediction about her death much later on.
Likely where Kat first gets the idea to build her own computer with a remote connection to herself, Chapter 21 (pg 517, 2009)
In chapter 25 ( pg 634, 2009) Robot is getting other robots to look at Diegos shrine of Jeanne, meanwhile calling Kat an angel in a very serious manner (here Shadow questions this). More robots come to visit and likewise call Kat an angel.
Robot spying on Kat (pg 878)
Kat can read the robot script derived from Diegos orginal script, which is supposed to be understable only to robots. She was also thinking about "growing" a robot, while Robot was secretly watching and following her (Chapter 33 pg 886, 2011)
We really see Robot being weird now, diefying Kat further, preaching to the other robots (pg 898 Chapter 33)
Here we finally see why Zimmy dislikes Kat and is afraid of her (pg 1048), as this is how Kat looks in the Ether (pg 1049).
Okay Robot is being wierd and preachy to the other robots again (pg 1294).
Here we see the seraph robots have brought Kat's work to the cruise ship and are about to set Zimmy off so that Kat can make the ship (sentient) a flesh body via the Ether. All in order to get Kat to advance her work further (pg 1399).
Kat banishes the seraph robots for instigating this, and Paz sees her in the same terrifying form that Zimmy sometimes does (pg 1443).
Its no surprise to the readers that the Court has ulterior motives, but we don't find out to what end all this comes to until the big turning point in the comic, where both the Courts plan and Coyotes plan come head to head.
The first hints we see of this plan are how the Court uses the former fairy and animal kids, as well as special characters like Zimmy and Gamma.
In chapter 5 we see Zimmy and Gamma still in their school unifmrs at night, while Kat and Annie are in pajamas. It is possible this is just because Zimmy doesn't sleep as revealed later, but maybe more.
pg 78
Chapter 11 we see Zimmy and Gamma in their unoforms again, while Kat and Annie are in casual clothes, it being the weekend according to Tom in the caption. This again presents the question of why these girls are still in their uniforms, but it is not easily answered by Zimmy not sleeping since its the weekend.
pg 184
Chapter 15 (2007) reveals that the former fairy kids don't get weekends or breaks off from school
pg 319
Chapter 19 the kids visit a power station, which draws up energy from the water before it discharges, affecting Zimmy. Jack mentions its an artificial lake a few pages before.
pg 452 pg 448
Hint at what the court aims to do in Chapter 20 (2008)
pg 497
Jack's been snooping around on the computers and could find information on students from two of the four school houses, but not those in Foley (former fairies and animals) nor those in Chester (like Zimmy and Gamma). While information on other students is not worth hiding, information on the those in Foley and Chester is valuable enough to the court to keep secret. (pg 700)
Chapter 27 (2010) we learn that the power station is called an Ether Station, used to collect and purify etheric energy, and that this energy is used in experiements unknown to Jones (pg 723). Renard poses a very relevant question (pg 708). What is the Courts end goal with experimenting with the ether? Especially considering the Court does not regard the Ether highly at all:
(pg 520)
Talking about Coyote's great secret leads Annie and Jones to consider how powerful the Ether is and how it could be used (Chapter 40 pg 1123).
Zimmy was brought to the court for "research", revealed in Chapter 27. Its likely other Chester students were brough in for similar reasons. pg 724
Annie accidentally names Red and Red mentions not having to go to school anymore as well as having her own clothes. Note that she along with the other Foley students and confirmed Chester students have not been shown out of school uniform. (Chapter 36 pg 994, 2012).
In Chapter 49 (2014) the class goes on a cruise which turns out to be signifigant later. This seemingly mundane panel introduces the question of what ocean they are traveling. After all, why wouldn't they know? It's not until later that we learn it wasn't quite the Atlantic (pg 1384). It is also worth mentioning that Zimmy appears to be sea sick when Annie first sees her on the boat (1390), and of course theres more to it that we know at the time. We also see Renard "seasick" when he intervenes (pg 1419).
This is a short one!
Annie has persistantly been shown wearing makeup, except as a young child, getting ready for bed, sick, or stuck in a ravine. It's an odd look, featuring olive green lipstick paired with cool toned pink eyeshadow. Overall she presents decidedly more feminine than Kat, often wearing long skirts and dresses. We see early on that her mom Surma wears the same make up in flashbacks where shes not in the hospital.
Kat disasterously tries to put on makeup for Aly, but Annie cleans it off of her, telling her she doesn't need it, prompting Kat to ask why Annie wears makeup, but of course Annie avoids the question. This is in Chapter 13 (2007) and isn't mentioned again for a long time.
pg 244Whats up with Surma?
At first Surma appears to be a cliche dead mother figure, pefect, wise, and loving. Idealized. Perhaps this is just a reflection of how Annie feels about her, having lost her at a relatively young age, regardless she is fortunately humanized with personality and flaws over the course of the comic.
Predictably, other characers call Annie her mothers name, despite her much younger appearance.
pg 26 pg 42 pg 119 pg 272
Surma shown in a comforting motherly role at the end of Chapter 16.
pg 359
Surma still shown in long blue flowing dresses, idealized. Here its revealed Renard was in love with her, but its unknown her feelings for him.
pg 494In Chapter 22 we get to see while Annie looks a lot like Surma, Surma is much more expressive and hot headed, while Tony is stoney faced.
Here in Chapter 31 (2010), we see Surma sort of leading Renard on. The next page we learn from Anja that Surma lead him on to draw him into the Court, which deamed him a threat because Coyote was trying to give him powers.
pg 791
Annie's mom didn't explain what the afterlife guides were, Chapter 9.
pg 154
Chapter 16, Surma lets Annie help two afterlife guides, yet still hasn't explained what they do, or that the people they visit have died.
pg 342
Chapter 21 Annie reveals that the guides didn't help her escort her mom into the ether (pg 530). But considering we later learn Surma had to do the same for her mom and so forth, why didn't she tell Annie she would have to before she died? Why add to the trauma of witnessing her mom die at a young age, by allowing her to wonder and wait for a guide, growing more distressed as none show up?
No one taught Annie about taking final records for those taken into the Ether (pg 1318 Chapter 46).
Okay Surma is pretty begnin, but what the hell is up with Jack (we don't know yet).
Jacks been shown to be acting a little disturbed lately since his visit into Zimmy's hellworld (which was in Chapter 19), but I beleive this is the first time we see the spider on his head, which is signifigant, Chapter 24 (2009)
Under the influence of the spider, Jack brutally bashes in the head of a robot, showing what he is cabable of. In the same chapter he also cruely traps Renard, Chapter 27 (2010)
pg 704
The next time Annie and Jack enter Zimmy's hellscape, there are multiple spide controlled Jacks trying to recruit an unaffected Jack. We also see Gamma is afraid of the "Spider's Nest", where all the spider Jacks are (pg 734 Chapter 28)
Zimmy removes the mind control spider from Jack and tells Annie theyre always trying to escape her mind (pg 739 Chapter 28)
We learn that the spiders love Zimmy to an obsessive degree (pg 928 Chapter 34, 2011)
Jack realizes Zimmy is on the boat and says its not safe for her (Chapter 49 pg 1394, 2014). Its possible he may know more about the "ocean" than the reader does at this point. It seems to me that the spider has given him protective instincts over Zimmy.
It's worth noting that Jack is the only person other than Zimmy that can "hear" Gamma's directed thoughts, in Zimmy's hell world at least (pg 1414, Chapter 49).
I actually don't strong feelings on Tony. He's a controversial character for being negectful (at best) to Annie. Her reaction to his callous treatment of her is to essentially dissociate, which of course hits heavy to readers who have abusive or neglectful parents. However, how the narative treats this is regarded as poor. We see why he can't open up to his daughter, that he does feel regret, and that he is even trying to be better as difficult as it appears to be for him, but no where is Annie ever allowed to express her greif and anger. She temporarily severs this part of her, but after she is forced to acept it as a part of her self, we never see her express her hurt. We only ever see Annie defend Tony despite the obvious turmoil he has on her emotions. Not that she ins't allowed to forgive him, I really don't mind that part, but it just seems like Annie's grief and anger never really got resolved, just ignored, which while in character for her, is not very satisfying.
I would like to be fair and say that while some fans interpret the comic as excusing or even supporting Tony, we really only ever see three characters in the comic who defend Tony, Annie herself, Ysengrin (who doesn't exactly have good mental health himself), and a side character who never met him, many more characters have less than favorable opinions on how he treats Annie. Ysengrin only knows what Annie told him, which she did so poorly, leaving him unaware of how he humiliated her. It seems to me that Annie's forgivness of him is simply her choice, not necessarily something we are meant to agree with. After having lot her mother and being parentless for a few years, its natural that she would want to have a relationship with him even if he sucks, thats her only family left.
Honestly my biggest gripe would have to be how quickly Kat turned, considering she hated Tony for abandoning Annie since Chapter 6. I feel like it would have taken more than a few funny jokes and good charisma for Tony to win Kat over. I can see Annie forgiving him, but Kat?
Chapter 6 will always be dear to me. Kat showing Annie the beautiful sunfilled room with the cherry tree, where Annie is shown having fun for the first time and being vulnerable infront of someone else. It solidifies their close friendship and I'm a sucker for deep friendships.
I've been trying to get screenshots of it for this section but I think I would just ened up reposting the whole chapter, so here it starts: page 87
I particularly like how Annie starts crying from laughing, crying and laughing have always felt connect to me.
Okay heres an image (pg 95)!
From my limited view of other fan opinions (its very limited) it seems like this is also a favorite chapter for similar reasons. Oddly I have seen some fans say they thought the cherries had some kind of chemical influence on Kat an Annie, which I think is a very odd conclusion. They're just being silly and letting loose.
Misrosat 5 is probably my top favorite chapter. I don't think this is a common opinion, but I love it. The fisrt page is already a killer.
The last panel alone drives me insane. It's not complex or beautiful, but lord the composition and the huge crack intersecting with Annie's classic stoic face is so striking.
In this chapter it isn't Kat who comforts Annie (who is very desperate to deny how she feels), but Kat's Dad who offers insight into Annie's Dad, allowing Annie to learn more about her father, and the reader to see the parallels between them.
Here Donnie (Kat's dad) offers Annie some water and brings to her attention that shes been clenching her hands so hard she has nail cuts in them
pg 1004
She starts to cry just as she begins drinking the water and of course chokes on the water, to which Donnie pretends not to notice. She then pulls herself together.
pg 1005 pg 1006
I particularly like how Annie was depicted crying here, choking on the water and then looking upwards to try and clear her tears. It reads very realistic and relatable to me. I've definately looked up (and crossed my eyes) in attempt to prevent tears from falling while around others. Its also nice that she isn't directly coaxed into spilling out her feelings and tears infront of somone as one might expect in a story, rather the other character tries to give her some privacy and dignanty by pretending not to notice, giving Annie some more agency.
They embark on a mission together, and Donnie tells Annie a story about her dad, which is shown in the comic as a flashback.
We are shortly greeted by the image of a young Tony, with a familiar stoic look on his face
pg 1011
Tony frets over what to do about a girl liking him, gradually withdrawling away, and we get this great image of Tony digging into his own hands just as we saw Annie do a few pages before.
1014I'm not sure why I like the parallels drawn between Annie and her father so much, but I do
There are a lot of romantic pairings in this comic about teenagers. Some are fleeting, some are since the beginning, some are frought, and some are simple. It seems everyon in the comic has a romantic pairing. Except Annie. This is never explicetly stated, but definately made obvious in certain arcs; when Kat is infatutated with Alistair and Annie is shown progressively further away from them; when they sneak out; when they are all on the cruise ship and everyone is hugging their partner while Annie stands there akwardly.
As an aromantic, I'd love to claim Annie as aro, but this isn't true either. She is plainly shown having a crush on Kamlen in the "Annie in the Forest" comic. Zimmy suggests Annie has a "thing" for Jones. When she is split in two it is revealed she thinks Andrew is handsome, and that she has an emerassing crush on someone unidentified.
In a comic where everyone is shown in a romantic relationship, it is definately signfigant (evenmoreso considering how well planned everything is) that the main character is not. And the characters Annie has canonly expressed interest in? Kamlen has a wife, Andrew is with Parely, and Jack? It really seems to me Annie just lead him on to get revenge, not to mention he was actively trying to murder her best friend in recent chapters. No chance. I have to say the only character I'd accept for her to end up with is Kat. The only time Annie is ever shown being jealous is when Kat enters a relationship with Paz. Now, its not framed as romantic jealously, so perhaps they will remain best friends, either way would be fine with me.
Yet I am mildly concerned it will be someone else. After all Coyote said "when" Antimony has a child (implying a male love interest), not if. But perhaps by agreeing to work for the afterlife guides Annie will not have a child and avoid the fate of her mother, grandmother, etc? Will she be the last of her flame, not to be reborn? She was supposed to die after all, which would have extinguished her line anyways.
Anyways heres some relevant panels:
In chapter 13 Annie drifts further into the background as Kat and Aly chat it up (pg 233)
Annie flips out on Mort after assuming he was trying to claim her romantically
pg 523
Annie looks irritated at Renard asking, and says she's not concerned about dating
pg 589
About Zimmy refering to Jack as Annie's bf
pg 739
Jack seems interested in Annie, she gives him an awkward handshake <3
pg 797
when? this implies a male love interest, although coytes predictions are not always right as seen much later (pg 819)
Jack and Annie are flirting but it turns out Annie wanted to lead him on and shoot him down to get revenge for him trapping Renard at the power sgtation (a href="https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=926">pg 926)
The only real crush Annie has ever had was on Kamlen, a forest elf, and this was only really touched upon in a side comic, where it turned out he had a wife anyways. Here he is shown, but this panel also shows Annie has a "thing" for Jones, as discovered by Zimmy (Annies closed off demeanor means we may have never seen this without Zimmy's abilities). Anyways, this panel implies that Annie is bi (pg 1036).
I cant state how much I love Kat and Annies friendship!!! I really can't, just that it is so dear to me.
Here's these panels from page 95 (chapter 6) again because its so sweet. Here is probably where I really got invested in them as characters and their friendship. A lot of the Ether things and entire chapters went over my head the first time I read Gunnerkrigg, but I grew attatched to the characters and kept reading anyways. (I've since reread the comic many times and understand the Ether and events a lot better).
Okay I'll be real, the rest of these are just examples of why I think they could end up together.
In Chapter 19, the first time Annie is in Zimmys hellscape, she demands to find Kat before Gamma, and we already know Zimmy is very dependant and close to Gamma.
pg 458
Kat calls Annie "super hot" (pg 475)
Annie sleeping next to Kat in the same chair, both under her coat, also "dearest" (pg 944)
Argugghgh this scene drives me insane in the best way possible. Annie found out Kat was dating Paz and ran away to the tree chamber she and Kat had visited in chapter 6, worried that Kat wouldn't spend time with her anymore (pg 1286 Chapter 45).
This is the closest we've ever seen Annie express jealousy relationship wise. And while I can understand being jealous as a friend (boy do I), it seems like Annie is still hiding something here (pg 1289).
Kat was nervous about how Annie would react to her dating a girl, but Annie points out something Kat had said one time before, and the way Kat responds in this tiny flashback, implies that Annie was the one who asked Kat if she would date a girl. Why would you want to know that Annie? Also note Kat's criteria of "super hot" is how she described Annie before.
Annie going to the dance with Kat (and Paz).
